Waiting list is open to enquiries early 2025
Locating a puppy as a potential prospect to raise into a future assistance dog or another fit for purpose role is an incredibly difficult task and there are many risks involved along the way. It's important to recognise that no matter the breed, not every dog identified as a prospect puppy will grow into a functional Assistance Dog or show/sport prospect. They are called prospects because potential has been identified only.
Many prospects are often washed out early on in their careers due to a range of reasons, so the chances of success are very low. Finding breeders who perform the correct health tests set by the breed clubs for their breed with good results, who early socialise and breed for type with correct temperament are some of the most important qualities to consider when beginning your search. Also, finding a breed that is fit for your purpose is essential.
Different breeds have different needs, so it is crucial to also choose a breed that you can commit to, accommodate and meet the needs of instead of one you like the look of. Do your research. Go to shows or events that showcase different breeds like Discovery Dogs or Crufts. Speak to owners of the breeds you are considering and get first hand pros and cons knowledge, you can find many owners on social media. Contact breed clubs to get more information on the breed and ask for recommendations of ethical breeders who will support your journey and can advise you on a future prospect. Check out the official Kennel Club website for a list of assured breeders, contact them to ask about their program, future planned litters and waiting lists. Contact local training and assistance dog organisations for more information.
Both parents should be health tested and with good results. Learn what tests should be performed on your preferred breed from breed clubs and ask to see evidence of this. Reach out to different breeders, ask questions, be prepared to answer just as many questions and be prepared to join waiting lists.
Whether you are looking for an organisation to belong to and train with or are owner training your own puppy prospect with private dog trainers, finding the right dog trainer/behaviourist and/or organisation are essential for assisting in the raising and nurturing of your prospect.
